ARRIVAL OF AMERICAN BARQUE.

Considerable interest was evinced in tho barque Narwhal, which berthed it the Breakwater on Saturday evening, after c voyage of Cd days from San Francisco The veasiel brought a cargo of JO,OOO cases of benzine and 22,000 feet of California!! redwood lumber. Tile Narwhal left San Francisco on November 14, and had a splendid voyage of 45 days to the Three Kings, off the northern coast of New Zealand. The weather was fine ail the way, and the winds wero favorable. On arriving within sight of New Zealand the vessel encountered contrary winds. She was becalmed for a time, and occupied 21 days in sailing to New Plymouth. The Narwhal was sighted many hours before she approached the, Breakwater, and the barque, with her square-rigged sails, presented a striking and picturesque appearance as she ncared laud just at twilight. The dredge Thomas King steamed out and offered to take the vessel in tow. The barque, however, entered the port under soil, being guided to her moorings by Captain Waller. Dr. McClelnnd, the port medical officer, cleared tile vessel yesterday morning, and the Customs officer, Mr. R. B. D. Eyre, was occupied for some time in granting permits to the crew to land, and seeing that- other requirements imposed by the War Regulations were complied with. A large crowd was attracted to thu Narwhal yesterday afternoon. Captain A, Hansen welcomed the visitors most cordially, and invited them to look over the vessel. Everyone was impressed with the neatness and cleanliness of the arrangements, and enjoyed the. visit very much. The master presented each of the. younger fry with a box of wooden sulphur matches. The Narwhal is an ohl vessel, and had f or many years served .s a whaler on the. Alaskan coast. This is her first visit to a New Zealand port She is of 523 gross and 38i) nett tonnage.
