Nine men from the Taranaki district will be despatched to camp to-morrow, to fill up shortages in the last reinforcement.
The Military Service Appeal Board for the Wellington district will sit in Hawera on January .11 and February 1 and 2. Sixty-four appeals from appellants drawn in the first and second ballots, and from men called up under section 3,"i, have been set down for hearing.
A charge of stealing a suit of clothes, valued at £G fe, at Hawera, on December 24, was preferred against Ashley Cameron Walla, before Messrs. H. R. Cattley and J. Clarke, J's.P., in the Magistrate's Court .on Saturday. On the application of the police, the accused was remanded to appear at Hawera on January 23.
There was an excellent attendance at the Municipal Recital given by the Citizens' Band at Kawaroa P'ark yesterday afternoon. The band, which was under the baton of Mr. F. W. G. MeLeod, contributed the following programme: "Lead, Kindly Light," '■Nearer, My God, to Thee," "Fierce Raged the Tempest," Handel's "Largo," Sullivan's "No. 1," "Tho Rosary," "The Harvest Moono," "The Victor's Return," "Canberra March," and Handel's march, "Scipio." Those present warmly appreciated the bund's playing. Great interest is being taken in the Wellington District rifle meeting that is to be held on the Putiki range, Wanganui, to-day and to-morrow. Over 350 shootists, including Territorials, Rifle Club members, and Cadets, from Napier to New Plymouth and Wellington, will be competing. The Territorial matches, and All-comers' matches will be fired bo-dny, and the Cadet matches to-inor-row. Besides liberal cash prizes., there are over forty which have, been kindly donated by Palmcrston North and Wanganui business people. The Chief Engineer of iiio Public Works Department (Mr. W. Tt. Holmes) and the district engineer (Mr. H. 11. Sharp), accompanied by the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), the chairman or the Taranaki County Council (Mr. J. S. Connett), the engineers to the county and borough respectively (Messrs. Sladden and W. .11. Cook) inspected the Waiwttkaiho bridge on Saturday morning. In the afternoon the visiting engineers, accompanied by the chairman of the Taranaki Countv Council, inspected the Okato River.
At the meeting of the Moa Road Board at Inglowood on Saturday, it was d-i----■icled to grant an all-round increase of 's rer day to the workmen employed by
no Board. In introducing the. matte; Mr A. E. Laurence said the Taranaki County Council and other local bodies in Taranaki had granted the increase. The Board's men were capable, and there was no reason why they should receive less than other men employed by the same ratepayers. In reply to a question, Mr. Laurence said the increase had not been asked for, but the men had been talking about approaching the Board. Mr. J. Bowler supported Mr. Laurence, and the proposal that the wages be increased to lis was carried unanimously.
"Tn my opinion no one should be admitted to a second school unless he or she had passed a certain entrance examination." said Sir Robert Stout in his i'.ddress to tho University Senate. "There are boys and girls in secondary schools who are not fit for the study of secondary school subjects. They would be far better employed in a primary school. We know that all our boys and girls are not fit for university studies. This shows the need of some efficient examination being held before even free places are granted to primary school children in secondary schools, The State's duty, no doubt, is to give the best, and highest education to nil its children, but it is useless to offer some children higher education—they ore not fit for it. It was reported at the meeting of the ,vneral committee of the Taranaki Agri■ultural Society on Saturday that Mr. 'ewton King would donate a handsome rophy of :>."> guineas for the llolstein 'etion at 1 lio Autumn Show. The meeting passed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. King.
The theft of 2s Od from a bathing shed on the Kgamotu beach led to the appearance of a boy before Messrs. H. I!. C-attley „nd J. Clarke, J's.'P. in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, charged with dishonesty. It was stated in Court that a series .if petty thefts nad been perpetrated on the beach, iml that the juvenile delinquent should be severely admonished. The youthful offender was warned that a repetition of his wrongdoing would mean the application of the birch or a lengthy stay in an industrial school. On promising not to offend again, .censed was discharged, no conviction being entered. It is up to all men to look to their personal appearance and it will pay to have your soiled suit renovated and made equal to new. Why not wrap it up ai once and send if to J. K.
