At the Hawera Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening, the borough employees applied tj>r an inr.'easo of wages, bringing, the pay tip to 11- per day. It was pointed out that since the war two increases had been' made, bringing the rate up to 10s Bd. The increase now requested was practically an extra 4d per day. The Mayor (Mr. Dixon) opposed any further increase, stating that th> Haweia em- |' tiyees were probably receiving as high a \te of pay as any body of men in a niilar occupation. Again, he believed it :ardly fair that wages should be on the ise when other accepted 'fis to light for tlfeir country. The extra inive.i«e would probably lead to an increased rate on the taxpayers. Hawera Borough employees are extending the tar-sealing of High Street .ill ft southerly direction. The work is well u: hand, and should, when com. pleted, be a. boon to those driving in that locality.
