Private David Ross Lander, Scottish Fusiliers, placed his foot on >i fallen bomb. His foot was blown off, but Ills party was saved. A WORTHY ENTERPRISE. London, .Tan. 14. The English and Scottish Wholesale Societies have purchased ten thousand ' acres of land in Saskatchewan (Canada) for wheat growing for co-operative mills, and is also purchasing land in India and Ceylon. BRITISH DOMINIONS AND GERMAN COLONIES. London, Jan. 14. Mr. Gavin, writing in the Observer, commenting ou the silence of the Allies' 1 reply on the subject of tlin German 1 colonies, says that /louth Africa, Australia, and New Zealand are free communities, and each has its own Monroe doctrine, and they will never allow the German menace to reappeai in their . neighborhood. As regards Ibe other Herman polonies, much will depend on the regime which may exist in Germany 1 itself and the value of the guarantees for future peace. 1 'le ridicules the German demand for ' a great African Empire, but suggests ' the creation in the Ottoman Empire and ' Africa of an international domain open equally to Germany and all countries.
