The 'heat wave is accompanied by excessive humidity, which is increasing, Ninety-six degrees were registered in the city to-day. PAYMENTS FOR WHEAT. Melbourne, January 12. Mr. Hughes has announced that farmers on- Monday will be advanced 2s 6d per bushel for the new season's wheat, representing a total payment of fifteen millions. The cash payments on last season's pooled wheat so far have beer £15,908,000, while the shipments not yet drawn upon represent £.5,002,000. EGOS FROM THE EAST. Melbourne, January 12. A deputation of poultry breeders complained of the importation of Japanese and Chinese eggs, which have so increased that they are ruining the local industry. The Japanese, imports for the year increased from £2OOO to £30,000, and asked for a prohibitive duty, and that eggs be branded. The Minister for Customs promised careful consideration, particularly with a view to the post-war policy in increasing Australia's productivity.
