STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Jan, 12, The entertainment given in the Town Hall last evening by the Elthain lads from the boys' home proved most enjoyable Every item was well received, encores being liberally responded to. The Mayor, Mr J. W. Boon, presided, and in a brief address eulogised the good work done in Army circles. Adjutant Cooke also addressed the audience. It is stated that the gross results were in the neighborhood of £32, so the Army funds should receive a substantial lift. , There was on amusing incident in Broadway to-day. One of th.-> music warehouses had a talking record going, and the conversation naturally was pitched in a loud voice. A beery individual heard the dialogue and staggered across the broad thoroughfare, evidently in search of company. When he was enlightened as to the "conversation" his remarks were forcible, but decidedly unpublishable. Mr. R. McK, Morison has returned after spending three weeks in the Auckland province. ■ There was a good run on the News here to*day. Some had the impression that the results of the third ballot were in print, but this was not so. The eagerness of some folk to obtain first news was similar to that of the morning after a race mcetjjjg. The public are continually being reminded that they should be cautious, now the war is on. Good advice, too; and all Stratford will exercise the right trand of cautiousness if they make their purchases at C. E. James' jewellery Store, Good value goes with every line purchased."
