INDIANS ATTACK ASKARIS. SANGUINARY FIGHTING, BOTH SIDES SUFFER SEVERELY. Received Jan. 11, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 10. In Bast Africa the 'fighting on New Year's Day was spread.over a front of twenty miles. General Sheppard's Indian troops attacked on the west flank, and drove .he enemy out of two elaborate lines of entrenchment. The enemy, consisting mostly of Askaris, encountered and cleverly ' lisposed of the Indian force. During the retreat there was bloody hand-to-hand fighting. The Asians thrice charged with the bayonet, showing excellent discipline and sound military qualities, but the Indians counter-charged, and drove the Askaris into the high rank grass.
