DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.*). TAFJKI. On -January 3, at the resilience of Mr. \V. Summers, Ross road, the settlers of the Tariki settlement ami surrounding district held a social evening in honor of oiu' of their number, Lance-Corporal Frank. Cladding, who was home on final leave. Mhs Summers presided at the piano, and songs were given by .Mrs. J. Ivory pßannevirke), Hiss Summers, Hiss I'lsie Summers, Messrs J. Mahon, A E. Cowley, Vv. Summers, and Master Sid Summers. Mr. W. Summers, in proposing the toast of "Our Guest,'' explained that owing to a mistake the wristlet watch which was to have been presented to him had not arrived, but he would have the pleasure of presenting it at the Taviki patriotic social 011 Friday, January •>. The toast was drunk with full musical honors. Lance-Cor-poral Cladding thanked them for the hearty welcome. He was only doing his duty, and lie hoped to arrive back safe ar.d sound after doing his bit, and meet them all again. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne'' concluded a very pleasant evening.
TAKATA. Tlie Tarata school picnic took place on Friday, December 22. A good number put ill an appearance and a very peasant day was spent. The .school prizes were given out by Mr. E. J. I bio, chairman of the School Committee. Nine good attendance certificates were Trained bv the following:-—Maggie Topping, Henry Ludemann, Gordon Ludemnnn, David Crowe, Jessie Crowe, Cordon Crowe. .Tack Maekie, Bell Maekie, Wnara Hoi Tukotawa. At tie school concert held in the evening the following programme was submitted:—Piano overture, Mi-s Sadler: chorus, "Knitting: recitation, "The Children's Song," May Officer; duet, Hesdames J. Druinmond and Maclvor; physical drill, senior g;ris; song, Mrs. Simmons; dancing steps; senior pupils; recitation, "Sunflower," Ken. Ible; duet, Mrs. J. Drummond and Mr. Difgald Patterson; action recitation, '-The Union Jack," senior pupils; choruses, "Mother Macree" and "Home Fires," pupils; song, Mr. Hoa: song, Miss M. Maekie; recitation, J. Maekie; dialogue, Maggie Topping ("Miss Mullit"), Elsie Xeilson ("Ho-Peep"), Don. Standisli ("Boy Blue"), Henry Ludemann' ("Tom, the Piper's Son''); sailor's hornpipe, F. J. I'.ggloton; dialogue, "A Good Girl,". M.irv Stuart ("Miss Cornelia", Elie Due ("Miss Molvina"), Glory Pearson "Katie"'), Miles Standisli ("Adam"), Cyril YV'aite (pastor), Albert Ible (deacon). The concert went'off splendidly, and encore", were numerous. The children's items were capital rendered and much appreciated. 'Die chairman thanked the perform-ers-and all who helped to make the picnic. and concert such a success. He invited one and all to take more interest in school matters.'. The training of the pupils reflected great credit' on the tc-Rchers, Miss Myrtle Maekie anil Mr. i'\ J. Eggleton. The singing of "God Save the King" closed a very successful concert.
Supper was handed round and dancing commenced, Music v. ;is supplied by Mr. Coreon's orchestra Mr. Coreen (piano), Mrs. liea (violin>, Ml'. Stockman (cornet and clarionet)—and was much appreciated by all. Miss Sadler n.ntriluited extras. Mr. W. Ludenmann made an efficient M.C. Tiie whole proceeds are to go to the Wounded Soldiers' Finn!. The musicians kindly performed free of charge.
