FIRE AT TIMBER YARDS.
BUTTER BON MATERIAL DESTROYED. A SEETHING MASS OF FLAME. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £25,000. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, Last Night. A terrific fire is at present raging jn Hamilton, the whole factory awl timber yards owned by Ellis and Bnrnand being ablaze. The conflagration started at 5 o'clock, and is supposed to have originated. in the engine-room. Within tell minutes (lie factory was a seething mass of flame, and, a strong wind blowing* tongues of Hame lapped across the intervening road and took hold, of large stacks of dried timber, which were quickly enveloped in a sea of lire. The premises ami yards occupy about eight acres, and at the time of wiring the occupants of dwellings near oj were removing therr furniture, while efforts were being made to save the large bulk store of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agencv Co. in the station yard adjoining. The factory was completely demolished. only the strong room, with the books intact, standing. The'most "prions feature is the destruction of large stocks of buttcr-bo\' timber, which requires to be of a special quality and thoroughly seasoned. As Ellis and jiurnnml are one of the biggest butter-box manufacturers in the North Island, many factories are likely to sufl'ei in consequence, though the firm if sending down a special staff of workmen to their King Country mills to enfleavor to fulfil orders. There was. 5 good deal of manufactured' joinery on the promises, .ir.d :it the last assessment the stock was valued at. £25,000. This is totally destroyed. The stock and premises wore insured for about £IO,OOO, mainly in the Commercial Union
