THE AUCKLAND MEETIXG. SUCCESS 01 XEW PLYMOUTH HORSES. Writes the N'ew Zealand Herald anent tile Auckland Cup:—With the whole of the fourteen acceptors 011 hand to fulfil their important engagement, the interest iu the two-mile race was brought to fever-heat. It was a popular opinion that it was, taken collectively, one of the best-conditioned fields that had ever contested the race, the only candidate voted to be above himself being Prince Merriwec. Tin top-weight, Chortle, who was one of the first 'to enter tile birdcage, looked trained to the moment, and though the big son of Multifid had to ho taken 011 trust for a two-mile race, his party held high hopes that he would see the journey out ail right. Frank Macmanemin had very , good reason to be pleased with Colonel Sonlt's condition; indeed, some were found venturing the opinion that the little bayhad nAvcr previously been quite so well. No, fault could he found with the New Zealand Cup winner, Ardenvohr; and Mullingar eairied such a hard, robust appearance as to cause his party to adopt the optimistic view. The Toff and Wishful, who carried Sir. G. L. Stead's colors, both looked very fit, while Lady Penury, on the strength of a fast gallop in her concluding training work., pleased n large number. BUickall, who is still a bit of n commonei in appearance, looked very much better than when he ran Balboa to a head in the Cup. John Barleycorn looked his part as a Cup horse, and his party were generally sanguine that whatever beat the bay sou oi'Sarto would be declared the Cup winner. Depredation, who had been under a cloud for several days, due to his having developed soreness in front, stepped round the entlosure without showing any symptoms of unsoundness; but there was the doubt, and he did not improve in favor. Bjornehorg's poor display at Woodvilie did not seem encouraging for his owner to attack the big race at Ellcrslic, but the three-year-old came in for fair support. Prince Mcniwee had both his forelegs encased in bandages, and, with his extremely robust appearance .counted in, he did not command much attention. El Gallo looked really well, and, though Mr. W. J. Ralph recognised that his well-per-formed jumper was confronted with dress circle company, lie. bad hopes of the Spalpeen gelding taking a hand in the settlement of the question. Alteration, who was the outsider of the iield, seemed to have been improved by his recent racing, but he was not taken seriously into the question. The preliminary gallops were executed in attractive style by the various contestants, Depredation and -Prince Merriwee, who dashed off together, being region sible for particularly vigorous effort?. The bracketed pair, The Tod' and Wishful, always stoqd out prominently as the popular selection, and at the close of operations Mr. 1 G. L. Stead's pair were found carrying a solid sum in advance of that invested 011 the second favorite, Blackall. Chortle was so solidly supported that he ruled third in demand, and the others were backed in the following order:—John Barleycorn, Mullingar, Ardenvohr, Colonel Soult, El Gallo, Bjoftieborg, Lady Penury, Depredation, and Alteration. Mr. OConnor experienced a deal of trouble in getting the field to line up properly, Colonel Soult and Ardenvohr being the chief offenders. At length the welcome cry. 'They're off!" resounded through the air, and as the field moved off the "black and white halves" borne by Chortle was picked out prominently. They had not travelled far when Wishful strode to the front, and as the Boniform gelding led a vell-bunehed field past the stand there was 110 mistaking the excitement that ruled. Wishful showed the way riglit round. Prince Merriwee, who ran up second as the concluding ftalf-mile was entered upon, created a lot of excitement by his run, but he had shot his bolt before the home turn was reached. As Wishful turned for home it seemed as though the second string of Mr. Gerald Stead's pair would be the one to score. Mullingar and Colonel Soult each put in attractive work in the run past the distance, and each had its name frantically called as the probable winner. While the excitement was at its height Depredation dashed up with a run of the electrical order, and he set! led the opposition in such brilliant, style as to make them look quite second rate, and he had the race in safe keeping from the lawn rails, and it might be said he fairly romped in. With T.st. 51b. Depredation was daintily handled, and had. thej'e been nothing to raise alarm there, is some reason to believe that he would have been one. of the strongost-backed candidates. The Tofli seemed to make heavy weather of it in the early stage; and possibly if, some ot the others had been ridden right out he would not have figured in fourth place. The race was run at a good solid paec throughout, and, considering that the track was not fast, the time record was satisfactory. The official timekeeper, Mr.' -J. K. Douglas, struck the various stages of the journey as follows: One furlong, 14 ;2-ss; two furlongs, 27 2-os: three furlongs, 40 l-ss; four furlong's, 53 2-5.3; seven furlongs, 1m 32 l-ss; mile, lm 455; mile and a half, 2m 375; two miles, 3m 27 2-ss. The last half-mile was covered in 50 2-as.

A strong field of seventeen went to the post for the Railway Handicap. King Lupin was the first choice of backers, with Bisogne and the bracketed pair, Chakwana and Menelaus, next in demand. Mr. O'Connor experienced a great deal of trouble ■ with- the field, 'Housewife and Hvttus misbehaving themselves to such an extent that they were ordered to outside -positions. When the barrier went up Housewife failed to jump off, and she took no part in the race, King Lupin and Multiplication were th,e. .p?ce-makers >n the early stages. Inside tiio distance a stirring struggle was witnessed, Downhain, on tln> .outside, and Bimeter, next the rails, making strong efforts to overhaul Multiplication, Bisogne came with a greal; run at the critical stage, and, amidst n scene of Jjiuc.h excitement, ho won fais race by. a owk froip Downham, At the half-m'iie pest- Bisogne was -runn.ng far back in the fielil, and his win was, therefor?,,,., renilf.red. decidedly meritei'iOAia- * _ '
