STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Dep. 28. Mr. C. 1). Sole, J.]'., presided at a sitting of the Court to-day. Milton \V. Barlow, a youth, was charged with breaking and entering a storeroom in the Empire Hotel and stealing four bottles of whisky, two glasses, and a box of eigars. On the application of the police accused was remanded until January S. bail in two sureties of £IOO each being granted. The borough employees are engaged on Pembroke Road and Cordelia Street making preparations in readiness for heavy traffic in connection with the races. It is very satisfactory to note that business people generally report a good Christmas week trade. Drapers we're well patronised, and, judging from the accumulation of fruit eases, the Chinese here were kept busy last week. A taxi-stand has been lived in the borough. Those plying for hire will bo found in Broadway, on the western side, between the County Hotel and Fenton Street. Cars are to faee north, and, when stationary, are to remain 10 feet fiom the footpath. Stratford and visiting folk will be well eaVrcd for during the next fewdays. The Wanganui Garrison Band is holding a sacred concert in the showgrounds on Sunday, and will be present at the races on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday evening the pantomime "Beauty and the Beast" will be staged. The concert and pantomime are both in aid. of the patriotic funds.

GENERAL. Goods trali'ie by railway was very heavy to-day. The morning train had 15 sheep and A horse waggons behind the engine. Heavy trains and much shunting makes running to time-table a difficult matter, but the railway officials managed to keep up to schedule. A fine mob of 1800 sheep, from the Toko district, Mas railed from Stratford to Wanganui vo-day. They were not en route to the freezing works, but were to "go on the land.'' Mr. Lamason advertises full particulars of his usual .Saturday sale at the mart. Those on the look-out for prime turkeys, fat geese, and heavy-weighl ducks. etc. should attend. Furniture and sundries are also to go under the hammer.
