KILLED BY A SHARK.

BATHER'S FRIGHTFUL DEATH. Sydney, Dec. 9. Waller Cromwell German, aged 41, lately residing at Torquay Point, Middle Harbor, had been accustomed for some iime to bathe in front of his home, his wife accompanying him? Yesterday morning about 0.30, as usual, he went with his wife for his morning swim, when, shortly after entering the water, being a short, distance from the shore, he was attacked by a shark. He was unable to escape, and was frightfully mauled. His left arm was completely taken away above the elbow, and his chest bone torn away, opening up his abdomen. His wife, by her screams, attracted the attention of a neighbor, Mrs. Evans, who came to her assistance. The two women succeeded in bringing German to the shore. He was living," though a great hole had been made in his chest, through which his heart could be seen beating. The police were communicated with, and Sergeant Stokes and Constable Cook arrived to render assistance, hut in the meantime Mr. German had died.

The upper reaches of the harbor have been proved the likeliest, places for bathers to be attacked by sharks. Within recent years, cases have occurred in the Lane Cove and in Mosman's Bay. Tlie shallow waters of quiet bays seem to be the favorite resorts rf the maneating types of shark.
