PATRIOTIC WORK.
BELGIAN APPEAL. Generous response was given to tlli appeal made by the Women's Patriotic League on behalf of the Belgian children on Saturday. The scheme inaugurated by the Mayoress (Mrs. C. H. Burgess)* of distributing small bags for the receipt of pennies was a happy idw, and' proved very successful. Brisk business was done at. the flower stalls, and the collectors were given liberal donations. All the boxes have not yet been received, but it is estimated that over 1150 was collected for the fund RESULT OF RAFFLE.
The draw in connection with the raflle held under the auspices <f the Red Cross Society took place on Saturday aiternoon, and the winners were declared as follow:-—First, doll, No 573, Miss Thillis Benne'.;-; second, Maori mat, No, 200, Miss Jean Brereton; third, cake, No, -249, Miss M. During the week preceding Christmas Day toys were sold at the Mart on behalf of the Red Cross Fund. Mrs. UcDiarmid originated the scheme, which cved very successful. The New Plymouth branch oi the British Red Cross wishes to acknowledge with grateful thanks the many kind helpers who gave assistance in connection with the recent fete at Aotea.
