EARNED GOLDEN OPINIONS.
XEW ZEALAXDERS OX THE SOMME Genera: Sir Alexander Godley, officer commanding the Xew Zealand Expeditionary Forces, in a letter to Colonel 0. V. C. Campbell, of Wellington, says-. "Our artillery lias heen doing excellent work on the Somme. The casualties have been heavy, and young Davies is a great loss. He was a capital fellow. I should be glad if you will make public, in your capacity as commander of the Wellington Garrison, how very much we nil ;regret and'deplore not only the loss oi Davies, but also Fleming Ross, formerly of the oth Regiment, and Dr. Martin, of Palmcrston North. They ..'ere all three men excellent officers, and I have the highest opinion of their capacity and the services they have rendered. 1 think that the public of the Dominion should know about their citizen army and their Expeditionary Force at the front, and the move they know about them the better. I only wish I could find time to write more frequently. The Xew Zealand Division has earned "-olden opinions on the Somme, and I hew from the army and several corps commanders most excellent accounts of their work and fighting. Their" casualties have been heavy, but I am glad to say that all of the brigadiers and commanding officers are all right this time."
