The name of Lady Black (8.7) was inadvertently omitted from the acceptances for the Fi7zherbert Handicap on the first day o'. the Manawatu meeting. TURF TOPICS. <By \Moturoa."s Depredation will contest the Tt Awamntu Cup to-day. Stratford acceptances dose on Wednesday next. Blackall's! recent form is bad for an Auckland Cup favorite. An Knglish-bred mare. Llanishen, is engaged in miiioi events at Kllerslie. Recently there has been a run on Wishful for the Auckland Cup, but it reads like a bookies' joke. Bronk Delaval will be a hot order in the Manawatu Cup. The Foilding prail i.i a first-class stayer. St. Francis, who is engaged at Stratford, won the Tauranga Cup from a moderate field on Saturday. Although not figuring on the official lists, Rewipoto, Hinetoa, and Record Breaker should be included amongst the Marton entries.
The Tassy Government \§ putting another thrummer on to Tatt's tickets' next year What a fortune there must be in the game! Taranaki and Stratford weights arc practically a replica of one anolher, though Mr. Henrys appears to hold a highel opinion of Veto than Mr. Morse. Chortle is in great heart at present, and it looks a certainty that he will pick up a good handicap at the Auckland meeting. Interlude has slipped into the RailwayHandicap at Marton with S.">, and th» company is not likely to be very select. If Pannrarc can only stay he is given a great chance to distinguish himself in the Marton Cup with B.S. Although looking verj jaded, Zola ran a decent race at Feihling, and if, given a chance to freshen up may- prove dangerous at the holiday meetings.
Kaccs for draught horses arc becoming popular in some parts of 'Stralia, and some of the pedigrees on the card read like these: "Out ot Berlin—by HlT,"'and "Out of the Bar—by G o : clcek." "Charlie" Emerson is credited with 33 winning rides for the four months of the present racing season, and if this rnr.arkable success sticks to him he will be an easy first amongst the horsemen for the year. Coropct lias caught it very hot at Awapuni, and is asked to give away tons of weight to useful performer* like Merry Andrew, Elation, and Black Lake. If the Manawatu Cup is destined to be Won by one of the top-weights., the lucky one may be Indigo. Mr. Jack Henrys, the recently appointed handicapper for the second day at Stratford, is a keen sportsman, and hiu seen racing in England, South Africa, .South America, and tin Commonwealth. He lias been thrice rejected for active service owing to injuries to a knee. Orleans is in fine fettle at present, and if sent up after the Stratford Cup should nearly land the utensil. Rewipoto is now well up m the weights, and will reu, uiri careful placing if he is to pay his way this summer.
An exchange publishes the statement that Arthur Olliver, who has been called u;> for active service, lias put up JC2SO to join the Flying Corps. This scribe wonders if Olliver could pass a medico. Jr. fact, few 'joeksters could. Racing must bu booming in Tasmania vhen (lie year's aggregate turnover has gent up over 21) per cent. Incidentally the ligurcs show thai racing clubs in those parls pocketed over six thousand pounds i" ''fractious." Less fashionable horses tliajl Dcpredat.ion have won the Auckland Cup.
Cold Lac had. a busy afternoon at the Bay of Plenty races on Saturday, starting three times for a first and two secords. Lady ITaldane, who holds an unbeaten record, is being sent up to Auckland to contest the Auckland Trotting Cup this month. Irainer K. Mason was booked to leave for Auckland yesterday with Bimcter, Biplane, Creenstreet, and Thames. Nones will probably race at Awapuni this Christmas. Two Lights, who has won a couple of races in 'Stralia. recently, runs in the colors of the Maslerton sportsman Mr. It. C. O'Connell, who owned a big string of racers in the late nineties. "Mick" was a bit of a runner himself, and when lie kept a pubhery in that village used to race all and sundry for the usual hcttle of wine—and always beat them, (00. ''Mick" touched the scale at about seventeen stout, but he could go some. Montana hal dropped right down in the weights, add horses that,.he was conceding 2st. to last autumn are now asl cd to give him weight. When the Elevation gelding strikes form, look out! Gaycium is now located at Kllerslic, and is a member of W. Mobberley's team.
"Joe" Conquest piloted four winners at Tauransra on Saturday. Others to score wcre--*Eobinson (2), C. Broivn, and J. Chaafe. Tlie ballot is eating swiftly into the ranks of the riders, and it is only « matter of a few months now when owner- will have to ride their own horses. So far the war hasn't affected racing worth mentioning, but the slump is coraiijji—nothing surer! From the South pomes the old complaint of the star chamber methods of holding racing inquiries, and there is an agitation for press stewards at all race 'meetings, and fuller information for the public. Taranaki's pressmen are fairly well catered for in this respect, hut in the majority of outside places there might be a *do;:en inquiries Vnd a score of owners "dealt, to" without the public being told a word. Official reports of all inquiries of public interest should be tendered by a specially appointed press steward, and thus do away with false reports that are always being circulated on racecourses. It is wonderful howsome of the younger (ami more rash) school of sporting writers manage to dodge libel actions. Tf they see a jockster hauled up to the stipendiaries' room, and any old sport on the. course tells them that So-and-so was ''cautioned for murderous horsemanship," they immediately push it into the. paper, while as a matter of fact nine out of ten jockeys may be only "sent for" to give evidence as to .alleged interference by other riders. It does the jockeys a lot of harm, to sav the least of it.
W. P. Mantle took Bisogn; north last night to fill his engagements at the Auckland meeting. J. George takes Alteration north on Tuesday to fulfil his engagement in the Cup and classic races. Depredation, Taranaki's other Cup candidate, has been at Kllerslie since the Takapuna meeting, and is receiving good attention at the hands of Bob Parlow. lie races to-day in the To Awamntu Cup, which carries no penalty.
