DISTRICT NEWS.
fARIKt. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Tariki Ladies' Guild held a most successful function last Friday to raise funds for the ambulance and comforts for - the boys. In the afternoon the ladies had a busy time attending to the wants of those prepared to spend in the shape of afternoon tea, sweet?, or buying - from the Christmas tree. etc. Tl'.e Guild's work was an exhibition, and it was a real credit to the small body of workers. (Great pity there are not more helpers!) In the evening a splendid .'oncert programme was rendered, each item being well received. Much credit is due to the conductor (M:, Eason) for the time spent and patience he has in preparing these concerts. I'he concert finished, the Christmas tree, etc., were again opened, and a busy time befel the ones in charge, for they appeared to lie doing a roaring business. Suppei was handed round, and after doing full justice to this the crowd began to disperse. .Remarks heard from one and all were that they had spent a mssfc enjoyable time. I hear the profit h in the proximity of £.">o. Well dor.c, ladies] You deserve it! - The local exhibitors, Messrs Ward, Harkness, Kendrick and Fraser, were successful at the late shows. I am pleased to report that Sergeani Swanson has rejoined bis unit, and that Privates 0. Reid and C. Thompson are progressing satisfactorily. Tariki's luck in the lirst ballot could not have been worse, one ease in particular being a real hardship. This refers to Mr. llamblyn's sou, wlio ha;, just reached the age limit, and is the only one left to assist on the farm. Tt has already been stated in the fariki notes that Mr. Hamblvn has five sons away doing thei. bit, and one of them is reported missing. The majority of parents are patiently waiting for- a mail from the front, Tbr of late only field cards have been received. ; The "Tennis Club were disappointed last Thursday owing to their match With Inglewood having to be postponed on account- of the weather. An enjoyable afternoon is assured the Inglewood team when they put in an appearance. I rcgydt tc have to report the death of one of on. longest standing settlers, in tht person of Mr. W. W. Ackland, who had readied the ripe < age of fll years, I'hc late Mr. Ackland had been confined to his bed for close on 12 months, but previous to this had been in remarkably good health. His funeral was largely attended, and showed the esteem in which he wn» held. Much sympathy is felt foi Mrs. Ackland and family, . , '
