PATRIOTIC WORK.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR SOLDIERS. HAWERA'S GREAT EFFORT. A meeting of the Gala Committee was lield on Wednesday evening, Mr. Kimbell presiding. The secretary (Mr. J. Campbell) reported that £BOO had been secured as v a result of Saturday's effort. Some discussion resulted as to what should he done with the amount. A plea was made that a portion should go to the Salvation Army, but eventually a motion was carried, .placing the money to the credit of the Y.M.C.A. for distribution of gifts to soldiers at the front. A sum of £SOO will be forwarded immediately, and the remainder later on, as reqtiired. It was explained that the Y.M.C.A. are right up to the trendies, -and forwarding the cash to these quarters would probably mean that the men in the trenches would secure the henefits from Hawera's efforts more promptly.
