PRIVATE JAMES' DEATH.
I KILLED WHILE FIGHTING. A COMRADE'S TRIBUTE. j The story of the death, on October 10, J of Private L. James, the son of Mr. F. P.. James,-Gover Street, New 'Plymouth, is told in a letter that Mr. James ha? I received from Corporal F. K. C'happell ■ (West Coast Company, Wcll,';>: ; '.on In fantry Battalion), who write:;—"i. would like to tell you just what the. circumstances were. On on.' portion of the sector which our uhaps were attack-, ing some pretty severe opposition was I encountered, and we werq ordered out j to support the charge. Leslie was quite I close to me, and just before we reached the enemy trench, which was being captured with great vim, a piece of shell struck liim, and he fell. We went to his assistance, but there was nothing to do. His end was peaceful, and without pain. We buried him with bis comrades on the outskirts of that little Tillage whioh you have so often seei. coupled with the New Zealandeiv names, and the plot will ever be kc; sacred. He greatly endeared himself . us all. His great, persevering, con>! tent Christian life was .patent to a. men. He was never heard to murnm. or complain, and each new difficult;, that presented itself to liim was met with that quiet cheerfulness that made companionship with him a pleasure. Loslie was always -the first to volunteer for any task, and anything that was entrusted to liim was always completed in an excellent manner. From the freshest recruit up to ibis officer, all men admired, trusted, and respected him, and all unite in mourning his early death." ~ "
