DRIVERS GRATEFUL TO MINISTER, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 4. A big meeting of the loeal drivers yesterday adopted the report of the Wellington conference an<l the terms of settlement. A resolution was also carried heartily thanking Mr. Herries for the tactful and able manner in which he had brought about a settlement, and expressing appreciation of the efforts of the delegates. A second resolution was to the effect that ways and means be discussed of amalgamating the existing drivers' unions.
ALLEGED FORGERY AND THEFT. Auckland, Dec. 4. In the Police Court, Thomas Wallace, Public Works Department foreman, was charged with, between March and November last, stealing moneys of the departments amounting to £127. There were also four charges of forgery of names on receipts acknowledging payment of wages to workmen. It was admitted that, owing to the department being short-handed, accused had a large amount of esira work, much of which should have been done by an ae-. countant. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. It was stated that full restitution had been made. Bail was fixed in one surety of £IOO and two of £SO each. MINERS' STRIKES. Nelson, Doc. 4. The miners at North Cape and Pll- - have struck, the reasons stated being a protest against oenscription and also a demand for 17 J per cent, increase in wages. About 120 men are concerned.
I FIRST BALLOT APPEALS. Wellington, Dec. 4. A thousand notices of appeal have been received to date from 4000 odd men called up under the .first, ballot To-day is the last day for posting notices of appeal. The Commandant expected the balance to be a considerable number. They should all be received By the end of the present week. A TYPOGRAPHICAL DISPUTE Auckland, Dec. 4. The Conciliation Court has heard the typographical dispute. A war bonus offered by the employers was rejected by the union, who put in counter-proposals for a higher scale of wages, which the employers declined to give. The whole matter goes before the Arbitration Court. Ar. agreement made by the Conciliation Court in the Auckland journalists' dispute has been ratified by the Arbitra tion Court.
CAPSIZE OF A SCOW. Auckland, Dec. 4. It is reported that the scow Welcome has capsized o(V the bar at Whakatane There are 110 details. RETURNED SOLDIERS FROM SAMOA. Auckland, Dec. 4. The. following soldiers returned from Samoa by the Talune, under SergeantMajor Dimwoodie, on two months' furlough: Sergeant Benseman, Privates Ingram, H. Johnston, J. Johnston, McDonald, Steedman, Marsden, J. Marshall, W. Marshall, Oakes, O'Neill; also-Pri-vate Alexander, who has been invalided.
