BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
WORKS COMMITTEE. Tlie Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. C. 1( linrgess), Crs. L. M. Monteath, J. S. S. Medley, J. \V. Ifayilcii, l'\ lv Wilson, A. ill. Johnstone, W. A. Collis, W. I'. Short, i\ J. Hill, S. J. .jjjmit'h, E. Griffiths, and J. T. Muunix. ' WESTOWN'S KEEDS. Messrs. J. D. Sole and F. S. Jolms, representing the Westown Progressive Association, wrote, urging the rieod of effecting improvements to Dawson Street, Standish Street, Wallace Place, and Tukapa Street. The writers stated that these streets were in a very bad condition, indeed, many places being dangerous to traffic. It was stated that) loan moneys had been diverted from these streets to other part? of the borough. The Mayor said no moneys had been diverted outside works authorised in the £22,000 loan, with the exception of that used to complete the tram route and to do work in Courtenay and Gill Streets. That this had to be done was unfortunate, but it eoijld not be helped. It Jiad been suggested that the money required for the completion of the tram route should have been taken out of the overdraft, but he had stirongly disapproved of that course. V 1910 the Council had a credit balani* of £SHO. In 1914 there was a debit balance of £SBOO, which was "reduced to £4IOO last year. This was likely to increase again this year. The Mayor proposed, and Cr. Griffiths seconded—"That the engineer be instructed to report on the cost of repairing Dawson Street, from tPowderliam Street to Stanley Street."—Carried. Cr. Hill proposed, #nd Cr. Smith seconded —'"That the engineer be asked to report on the cost of putting .Standish Street, Wallace Place, to Tukapa Road, and Tukapa Road in order."— Carried. ENCLOSING A WATER COURSE. In reply to Mr. A. E ,Sykes' application that an open watercourse raining through his property be enclosed in a drain, the engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) reported ihat if the (Council undertook to pay half the cost of laying drains in place of all the natural watercourses running through private properties in the borough, the whole of the Council's revenue would be ear-marked for one class of work. The watercourse in question was not polluted. Mr. Cook recommended that the application be declined. It was decided to defer the matter, pending a. report from the health inspector as to whether the stream would be a menace in midsummer. «
COVER STIUSET. The Taranaki Jockey Club wrote, asking the Council to put Gover Street ir. order Before the club's summer meeting on December 20 and 27 next. The engineer reported thas to put the road in temporary repair, the sum of £45 would be ' entailed.' The engineer was given authority to do the work.
XGA-MOTU WATER SERVICE. The Council resolved to agree to a request made by the Nga-Motu Improvement Society to ky o 2-inch water-main along Pioneer Road, from Moturoa Road to the beach, and a 1-infV main along the beach; also to form aiK" metal the Pioneer Road to a width of 12 feet. ,
