AUSTRALIAN LIST, . Sydney, Nov. 27. In tlx latest casualty list appears the names of the following New Zealanders: —Killed in action: Lieutenant K. George, Private J. Sullivan. Wounded: Private F. W. Sherwin. Ill: Privates A. F. Simpson, J. T. White, S. B. Osborn. Seriously ill: Private J. 13. O'Shea. Wounded and dangerously ill: Sergeant F. W T ilson. Wounded and prisoner of war: Private T. 11. Berket. PAYNTER'S LANE. WORK TO 'PROCEED. Alternative schemes for the improvement of Piiynter's Lane were submitted to the Works Committee of the Borough Council by the borough engineer (Mr. W. 11. Cook) last evening.
Discussion ensued as to the advisability of proceeding with the work, and Cr. S. J. Smith said there was more urgent work in the borough than Pavnter's Lane claiming attention. He instanced the drainage work from Mr. Barrie's to Mr. Weller's, at iFitzroy. He considered the Council had departed from the plan of work it had previously laid down. lie wanted those present to disabuse their minds that there was any desire on his part to unduly further the interests of Fitzroy 'particularly. The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) expressed his impatience at tho delay in carrying out the work of the £42,000 'can. He wanted to see something done. The Council had a new engineer, who had brought forward a recommendation, and the Council hesitated about accepting it. He wanted t.lip. work w go on, but the Council was evidently not similarly inclined. The Council was under an obligation to certain ratepayers to do t'ne work required in Paynter's T-ane. The Council had done practically nothing with the £42,0(!0 loan. The engineer had now brought down a recommendation, and he. considered the work should be gone on with. Cr. L. M. Monteath entirely disagreed with Cr. Smith. .The Council had been in office two years, and it had money lying practically idle. He was anxious to see the residue of the £42,000 loan spent. "Let us get something done!'' concluded Cr. Monteath, The Mayor remarked th?.t he desired to get the £teiooo loan icuncy disposed of. At any rate, lie wanted to set the work under way before the Council went out of office. It was finally decided to adopt one of the engineer's schemes in connection with the work, the cost to be £271 10s.
