THE CHEESE QUESTION.
OFFERED TO IMPERIAL GOVERN--IIENT. AT lOd. EX STORE. A meeting of representatives of cheese factories was held ut llawera yesterday to consider the question of ottering the cheese tc the Imperial Government. It was originally intended to confine the meeting to representatives oi factories that 'had not sold their whole output, but the meeting was open to all cheese factories. Air. A. Morton (chairman of the National' Dairy Association) presided over an attendance of over 00 representatives. At the outset the Chairman stated that the question of allowing the Press to be present would 1 need consideration. He pointed out that a good deal of the information that would be put before the meeting would be of a confidential nature.
Mr. 'Powdrell said that already some of it had appeared in the Press. He believed that publicity would do no harm. It could be safely assumed that nothing would be published detrimental to the cheese interests. Mr. Marx moved—"That the Press be asked to retire." The motion was seconded by Mr, McMalion, and, on being put, was declared lost on the voice.-;, but 011 :i show of hands was declared earned by two votes,
Later the following resolution, passed at the meeting, was communicated to the Press:—"That the l!)l<i-11)17 season's unshipped cheese be offered to the Imperial Government, delivered into stores in New Zealand, at 4d. per cwt., payment to be made monthly on previous month'-; delivery, conditional on all unshipped New Zealand cheese being commandeered by the Government on the same terms."
