Speaking at a luncheon, Lieutenant-Colonel Weir said it was almost impossible to conceive the magnitude of the war in France. The casualties were so great that it was imperative Australian reinforcements should be continuous. Lieutenant-Colonel Weir declared that when he heard aboard the transport. the result of the Referendum, he felt he could heap ashes upon his head in misery. Australia had not played the game as British soldiers, and the men aboard'the ship thought the visit of a few Zeppelins to Australia would do good.
REGULATION OF FOOD PRICES. GOVERNMENT MAY TAKE OVER ;WOOL CLIP. deceived N£v. 23, fl,4j p.m. Melbourne, Nov. -23. Mr. Hughes has announced the policy of the new Government regarding the regulation of food prices to protect the community from exploitation, through high freights and other causes operating, with a minimum of interference. The Federal Cabinet, it is understood, lias made an important alteration in the taxation scheme outlined, before the Referendum.
The regulation prohibits tiio sale of wool ami sheepskins without permission. It is believed this action is preliminary to the Commonwealth taking over the wool clip,
THE NEW RECRUITING SCHEME.
Keeeived Nov. 23, S p.m. Melbourne, Nov. •23 Mr. Hughes discloses the Government recruiting proposals when Parliament meets on Wednesday. It is understood they will be on the lines ot Lord Derby's scheme.
