The Post Office advises that, owing to an interruption in the cables between Porthcurnow (England) and Gibraltar, all Great Britain traffic vi# Eastern is subject to heavy delay. Soldiers', weekend, and some deferred telegrams are being posted between London and Gibraltar.
The secretary of the faranaki Provincial War Relief Association (Mr. W. Power) is engaged in visiting local committees, and at the next meeting of the committee of the Association he will table a statement showing the amount of relief afforded to returned soldiers and dependants of deceased soldiers in different parts of the district since the Orders-in-Council authorising the transfer of the funds of the Association were granted.
The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was marked* by its unusual length and the strenuous nature of the business that was transacted. The meeting commenced at 11 o'clock in the morning and, except for an hour for luncheon and a few minutes for afternoon tea, the Board worked consistently until nearly C o'clock in the evening. A considerable amount of time was devoted to the consideration of the reports of officials. In all 70 resolutions were passed.
' An unusual procedure was adopted in connection with the election of the chairman of the Clifton County Council for the ensuing year at the statutory meeting held on Wednesday. Mr. A. M. Bower, who has been chairman for three years, was proposed and seconded for re-election. Cr. Purdie moved, and Cr. Old seconded, as an amendment, that Cr. H. B. Pigott be elected. It was stated that Cr. Pigott would be more in touch with the officials of the Council than Cr. Bower. On the clerk putting the question, two votes were given for each candidate, and it was, therefore, resolved, in conformity with the' Act, to obtain a decision by lot. The names of the two candidates were put into a hat, and a draw was made. The result was that Cr. Pigott was declared elected. The new chairman thanked those present for the confidence they had shown in him. Cr. Bower congratulated Cr. Pigott on his election, and heartily wished him success in connection with the Council's work.
