"ALAS, THOSE CHIMES."
lo the Editor. Sir,—l was much pleased to read if! yc.ur issue of 1 his morning a few lints from "A Lover of Chimes," as one of 1.110 committee also a subscriber, to provide this little village with the town clock and its chimes many years ago in cor, junction with .ninny much respected townsmen who probably had a perspective of a future ''City of New Plymouth." Notably amongst the number was our old and much-respected townsman, the late Jas. Paul, who was the prime mover in providing the town clock for this coming city, and vhy annul its usefulness? Talk about annoyanco to a community! 'What about other cities, where the lead■jijj hotels are, ir. fact, alongside the Post Offices, where the town clocks exist? .Mi bosh! Citizens in most cities value their chimes. I did not thinK we had a council so weak-kneed -as tc vote for eveii a partial discontinuance of our nmcli-valucd chimes. I trust it may never be carried out.—l am, etc., ONE OP THE ORIGINAL COMMITTEE A.ND SUBSCRIBED.
