"KABALA."
Do the Editor. Sir, —Wi.l you allow me to reply, through your paper, to the letter of j. 0. Ellis in Monday's issue? It is a generally-accepted axiom that when eithor party in debate or argument descends to vulgar abuse, that party is getting the worse of the argument, both of wliicn' J. G. Ellis undoubtedly lias done. In listening to him last Wedii':sday, and cn reading hi 9 letter on Monday, one can scarcely congratulate him upon either manners, education or tolerance, but one did feel sorry for him on Wednesday during the debate when he tried to air his very limited knowledge of Greek and Hebrew, and I do not think that Mr. Ellis did all the floor-wiping! According to 'his Hebrew, the placing of the letter II (which stands for a) in the centre of a circle makes 15. ordinary 14-year-old schoolboy would say it makes 5 or 50. To the student of Kabala it conveys nothing; only to the" brilliant intellect of a Mr. Ellis it makes 13. Last week Mr. Ellis attempted to make 15 by another method, namely, II for 5 and Y for 10, but Mr. Kelland pointed out that the result must be either 105 or 510 if that method be used. Mr. Ellis is evidently not yet quite sure of his position. I believe Mr. Kelland' is one of the first to acknowledge the limitations of all students of spiritual or occult science and their ignorance of many things, and certainly has never posed as the last word in knowledge of any kind. Neither has he at any time expounded his system of numbers as ancient Kabalism, but as a system based upon "Kabala," adapted for the use of modern western nations. "Pantheist" is quite right in saying the circle, and line (or dot) is the symbol of God. It was used to signify tlie Great Spirit before numbers or letters were in use at all. There are many things yet to be discovered, undreamt of in our modern theology, and, after all, we are, each and every one of us, hut little children, groping in the dark for Something our souls tell us exists. Personally I think that each and every one of us shouid be allowed to grope jn any direction we please, and that all sects and religions should develop tolerance and respect for each other. God is not the monopoly of any church or nation; He is Father of all.—l am, etc., ONE OF THE WEAKER SEX.
