DISTRICT NEWS.

CARDIFF. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Cardiff school was packed on Friday night as it has never boen packed before to farewell two of ;lio most popular boys of the district, Tom. and Sid Carloy. The usual programme at such, functions was gone through, till Mr. Richards rose to make the presentations, whereupon the "fun" commenced —"fun" that made the eyes misty. Most of the speech was drowned in cheers, and when the "unfortunate" recipients rose to respond, you couldn't have heard a "Jack Johnson" go off, and it is not to : be wondered at. Even a "slacker" can't hold a cheer back at times. One reads of families sending 7, R, and 11 sons to the war, and that is splendid. We have a family in Cardiff that has sent five out of seven, another three out of five, another the only two sour tliey have,' but the record of the Carleys takes a lot of beating. Harry, tiie eldest, went with the Expeditionary Force and laid down his life for tt\ Empire at Gjllipoli, but, before he died,' his mother, who was in indifferent health when he went, passed away, her end without doubt hastened by many years through worry. Then Silvie went (he is now serving in France), whereupon the other two boys of military uge reckoned they were going too, but were induced to stay until some arrangement could br, made for working the farm, which arrangement ended in the father having to sell off all his cows and half the farm through inability to work jhe same. Thank God, he has got boys to be proud of, and to one who has known and appreciated him for over a quarter of a century, it was splendid to see the [ reception accorded his splend'd lads on [ Friday night.
