CHAMBER OP COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.)' Stratford, Nov. ,'!. The Chamber of Commerce, held a meeting last evening, the president, Mr. •]. B. Richards, being in the chair. The chairman reported that a deputation had waited on the Hon. W. Eraser, Minister for Public Works, in reference to the construction of the StratfordOkuhakura railway, and also as to the Waitiri Road. The report was received. Communcations were received from the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, Education Board, Ohura County Council, and Stratford County Council, supporting the Chambers' application for an extension of the telephone communication between Tahoia and Tatu. Reference was made to the difficulty of obtaining postal notes, post office orders and stamps of large demoninations promptly at all hours ac the Stratford post office. Representations will be made to the Stratford postmaster in connection with the matter. Some time was taken up in discussing remits to be considered at the conference of chambers to be held at Wellington on 22nd and 23rd inst. The president was appointed to represent the chamber at the conference, and was also requested to make representation to the Post-master-General concerning the need for the Tahora-Tatu telephone eitension. | ©ENERAL. Captain Furbee, who has been inspecting the Stratford Territorials, left by the mail train this morning. Our military visitor is well and popularly known in this district, having been stationed here for some time prior to leaving for the front. - He was wounded whilst at Gallipoli, but has made a good recovery. A band of enthusiasts were engaged yesterday getting the grounds and buildings in readiness for the A. and P. Show now approaching. Several Stratford bowlers visited Eltham yesterday, and took part in the official. opening of the bowling season. They spent a very pleasant afternoon, the green being in good order. Bowlers were surprised to learn of the rain here, Eltham enjoying glorious sunshine. Mr. Jonas Masters has received news of the death of, Mr. W. Webb, of Onehunga, to-day. Deceased married a niece of Mr. Masters, there being two children left to mourn their loss. Mr. Masters remarked that during the past two years death had claimed a brother, Bi'ster-in-law, mother, sißter, and now his niece's husband.

Sergt.-Major Mahoney was busy here yesterday as a 'reeruitnig officer. He made personal calls at many establishments where likely recruits were engaged. They are still "likely," but hardly probable, recruits, as in some instances he was met with a point-blank 'No!" Evidently they (the eligibles) are waiting for the Government to take action. To-day the sergt.-major is scouring the country for suitable material for Expeditionary Forces, and by the lit, if energy counts for anything, should show results. Some eases concerning the anti-shout-ing law were to have been heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day, but, owing to the absence of the Magistrate in Wellington, these have been adjourned for the present. In conversation with a Waipuku farmer regarding farm matters "your own" was informed that wheieas before the war a man on the land could sow grass-seed at the cost of about 30s, it was now running to £2 5s per acre. A meeting of Municipal authorities and the directors of the Electric Light Company was to have been held to-day. The principal business was to be the presenting of a cheque in the neighborhood of £15,000 by the Borough Council in connection with the purchase of the electric light'works here. At the Magistrate's Court, before Messrs. J. McCluggage and F. J. McDonald, J.P.'s, judgment by default was given in the following cases: W. E. Lawrence v. G. G. Cuthbertson, £3 16s Gd, costs 10s; G. E. Wilson v. M. Loveridge, £5 2s 4d, costs 27s 6d.
