BATTLEFIELD TROPHY.
TAKEN FROM A DEAD GKRMAN. An interesting souvenir from the firing line has been forwarded to the Minister of Defence by Brigadier-General Brnithivaite. It is a German Mauser pistol, and was taken from a German soldier who was killed during a raid on New Zealand trenches on July The weapon bad evidently not been long in use, and its holster is made of the best cowhide. The pistol is to be placed in the Dominion Museum. Following is an extract from a letter forwarded by General Braithwaite:—
The Brigadier wishes to place on record his appreciation of the work done hv the undermentioned n.c.o.'s and men of the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, who were on dntv us bombers in on the night of '2Hh July, 1016. By their coolness and devotion to duty, they beat oil' the enemy's raiding party, estimated at about 25 or ,10 Germans, who, when attacked and bombed, retired, leaving one dead man and several articles of equipment, close to our wire:
