BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

WORKS COMMITTEE. A mooting of the Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Colinoil vas held last evening. In the absent of the Mayor, Cr. L. M. Montcnth p.?«ided. Others present were: Crs. J. S. S. Medley, J. W. Havden, p. Wilson, A. H. Johnstone, W. *A. Collia, W. F; .Short, S. J. Smith, E. Griffiths, and u. T. Mannix. The acting borough engineer (Mr. S. Hooker) reported that the roadway in Dawson Street was low all the way from St. Anbyn Street to Young Street, and required metalling so that the surface water would How into the channel. Mr. Hooker said SO yards of metal, costing approximately £4O, was required to raise the street to the level needed.— Adopted. Mrs. M. Gilbert was granted permission to erect a dwelling in timber at tl'.' corner of Dawson Street and Regina I'l.lCP. Mi. J. Brown, locomotive foreman of '.iiiv New Plymouth section of the Kailway Department, wrote, statins that the water charges for August and September appeared to be excessive, and suggested that the meters were not. reading correctly. He desired that the ir.et'Ts be tested. In the meantime it wns suggested that the average charge be accepted. The Council decided to adopt Mr. Brown's suggestion and to ' accept the average charge offered. The Taranaki Agricultural Society applied for a connection of the town water supply with the Society's grounds at Waiwakaiho. The application was referred to the engineer, and he was authorised to do the wcrk provided the Society agreed to pay the cost. The building inspector, Mr. R. Day, vriting with reference to Mr. W. H. Beadle's application for permission to erect a wooden and iron extension to his shop in Gill Street, said that there was no reason why the extension sliould not be built in brick or concrete. He had no recommendation to make. The application was refused by the Council.
