WESTERN ATTACK.
BRITISH PROGRESS. FRENCH BREAK ENEMY ATTACKS. Received Oct. 30, 8 p.m London, Oct. 30. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We further advanced north-oast of Les Boeufs, and captured another trench. The enemy was heavily shelled in various parts. South of Ancre and elsewhere there was intermittent shelling. A French communique states:—After violent bombardment the Germans attacked positions north and south of Lamaisonettc, using liquid fire. The attempts were broken and thrown back. Lively artillerying continues north of ,Verdun, but with, no infantry attacks. There is quiet elsewhere. JUST LIKE THE KAISER London,' Oct. 2D. The Times' correspondent at headquarters says that prisoner? state that the Kaiser, during his recent visit- to the Somme, ordered the immediate reeonquest of all the ground lost since July 1. FRENCH PROGRESS Paris, Oct. 20. A communique says:—We made progress at Sailly-Sailiisel. and Blachcs. The artillery duel continued northward of Verdun. A DISPUTED GERMAN' CLAIM Times Service. London, Oct. 20. A German official message claims that English attacks between Gneude-, court and Les Boeufs were repulsed, but the English, gained the front trenches. SHIELD TO PROTECT INFANTRY. London, Oct. 20. General Malletterre is initiating a campaign in France to provide a portable shield for protecting infantry advancing against' machine-guns. GERMANS SURPRISED. Paris, Oct. 20. The Petit Pnrisien say? the suddenness of the British attack at Les Boeufs surprised the enemy, who abandoned his positions almost without a struggle, and left great numbers of dead and wounded.
