London, Oct. 20. General Malletterre is initiating a campaign in France to provide a portable shield for protecting infantry advancing against' machine-guns. GERMANS SURPRISED. Paris, Oct. 20. The Petit Pnrisien say? the suddenness of the British attack at Les Boeufs surprised the enemy, who abandoned his positions almost without a struggle, and left great numbers of dead and wounded.
