' In a recent casualty list appears the following:—Reported wounded, now reported killed in action .—Lance-Cor-poral .lames H. Middlemiss (next of kin, Mia. E. Middlemiss, Inglewood, mother). One of the best known of the younger school of Rugby players who have represented New Zealand was Robert S. Black, now known as Corporal Black, of the' Otago Mounted Rifles, reported to be missing. Robert Black was educated at the Otago High School, and was one of the. best players in that school's first fifteen in his later years there. Subsequently he played for the Pirates Club and represented Otago and the South Island. He was a member of the New Zealand team which visited Australia in 1914, and won all of its ten matches. Black was a first-class live-eighths, clever, nippy and fast,' He was about 23 years of age. ' Mr. J. Cullen, 1.5.0. (Commissioner of Poll't), has received advice by cable of tin: death in France of his sen, Gunner Leo. Gerald Cullen, of the New Zealand Field Artillery. Gunner Cullen, who !<:ft New Zealand with the Oth Reinforcenents, was 23 years of age. He was wounded on October 13, and died two days later. He was for some time before enlisting in the service of Messrs. John Burns and Co., Ltd., warehousemen, Auckland, and for a shorter period with Messrs. Briscoe, McNeil and Co., Ltd., Wellington. Seigeant H. R. Salmon, reported killed in ration, was the eldest son of Mr. T. B. Sahiion, until lately postmaster at Hav.tm. Mr. Salmon had only two sons, and they both went to the war. His youngest son, Cedric, gained the D.C.M. for bravery. Private Harry Blair, killed in action, v.'as forty-seven years of age, and the third son of Mr. W. Blair, of Stratford. At the time of his enlistment he was employed on railway construction for the Public Works Department, in the Bay of Plenty district. Previously he had lived at for some twelve years.

Intimation of the death from wounds of i'nd Lieutenant E. P. Greatbatch, only son of Mrs. E. Greatbatch, New Plymouth, and grandson of Mrs. J. BellThomson, was received on Thursday evening. Very sincere sympathy will be felt for his mother and family in the less. During his course at Wellington College, Percy Greatbatch proved himself a jine scholar, and at athletics was equally successful. On coming to New Plymouth he entered the legal firm of Messrs Govett and Quilliam, and it was not long before he had qualified as a bairister and solicitor. A remarkably gcod cricketer, he was the youngest olayer for Taranaki in the match against Australia a few years ago, and for the Law Cricket Club he rendered valuable service. Entering into a legal partnership in the Waikato, Mr. Greatbatch practiced there for two or three years. He enlisted witli the Riflo Bligade (4th Battalion), and had only recently been promoted from Sergeant to a commission. Mr. J. R. Stewart, of Manaia, has received word that his 3econd eldest son David, has been killed in the recent heavy fighting at the French front. David Stewart was born in the district, and was in a physical sence a perfect type of young New Zealand manhood. When the call came he was s'heep-farm-iv.g on the Wanganui River with, his brother Sergt. Malcolm Stcvart, at .present suffering from wounds in a London hospital. Both boys fought on the Peninsula and at the evacuation both went into the firing line in France. Private Stewart was killed in action on September 21, and the late news of his (Kith reached Manaia the night after his interesting letter "A Bit of a Picnic," was published, in last Wednesday's "News." The delay in getting word through was probably due to him' meetin;:' his death in Xe Man's Land, where it is not always possible to reach and identify the bodies. In the-latest casualty lists appear the following Taranaki names (next-of-kin in parentheses):—Killed in action: Private D. R, Stewart (J. R. Stewart, M'inaia). Reported missing: LanceCorporal A. C. Leith (Mrs. J. fyuth, 'Vavcrley); Private W. E. Hinch (Mrs. M. Collingwood. Inglewood); Private H. J. Hamblyn (C. J. Hamblyn, Tariki); Lance-Corporal G. W. Ward (S. H. Ward, Manutahi, Hawera).
