(By "Moturoa.") ■ When 'Deesrt Gold was ''stepped out" for the Champion Plate on Tuesday, the public, unforgetfnl of last year's succession of triumphs, rushed the mare so solidly that as a betting race it was a pure fiasco. But keener judges, taking into consideration the fitness of the more seasoned Nones, shook their heads thoughtfully and stood off. Here was Desert Gold—practically "off the ice"— up against the Wellington Handicap winner of the previous day, as well as other good performers. It looked as if she would have to gallop, and that she sure did! Beginning with her usual smartness, she showed a whole panoramic view between herself and the field until the turn was reached. Here Nones came fast, and at the distance was almost on her "hammer." O'Shca then set down to ride in earnest, and Deeley did ditto on Nones. For a few strides the mare racked nec-k and neck, and then the old) champion asserted herself, drawing out and winning a fine race by just under a length. Excitement knew no bounds! Hats went in the air! Cheers broke out again and again. Desert Gold was still champion! Before the race was run local punters were figuring out what they would do with their winnings over Rewi Poto in the Wellington Handicap. The Commercial Hussars were to get a cut! and then there were the picture shows, the butcher, the baker, and sundry others to quieten. But alas! The "moral" was badly "outed." Down at Waverley they even had trie dividend—six pounds odd, they say—such a stone certainty was it. But the black horse was found wanting from the word "go" lie fretted and back-shoved at the barrier; was sent to the outer; and never flattered his supporters at any part of it. There are no sure tilings at Trentham, and Rewi Poto is a bad horse in a big field anyhow. The best two-year-old seen out thlg season is undoubtedly Crowhurst, hy the defunct Rokeby from Happy Valley. . Ho was in front after a couple of furlongs in the Wellesley Stakes, and scored decisively oy a couple of lengths. . In the Juvenile Handicap on the sec-olid day he began slowly and was well smothered up at the turn. Then Ollivcr got him clear, and—swish! it was all over. The only fly in the ointment is that Crowliurst is not engaged at either Ricearton or Ellerslie next month, 'Tis an ill wind, etc. Although coming on -with every gallop Bisogne was not considered forward enough to prove dangerous amongst the crack sprinters to be met at Trentham, but he surprised all hands by running a sterling race in the Nai Nai Handicap on Tuesday, only being touched off by a nose. He w.19 galloping over everything at the finish, and racing form won't be form at al! if he , doesn't catch a heat at Ellerslie,

■ The New Zealand Clip comes up for decision on Saturday next, and the latest to be rushed in tlie market; is the Aucklander, Merry Roe. She was produced in the Wainui Handicap on the opening day of the Wellington meeting, and after getting crowded back at the start tame through a big field in the straight and won without apparent effort. Behind were wer# Chakwana, .Indigo, Multiply, Marc Antony, Egypt, and other good ones Alerrv Roe is herself again, and she should just about start favorite in tin big two mile handicap on Saturday next. Although beaten in hack company at Wanganui, Splendant (or should it be "Splendent") was equal to winning each day at Trcntham. He ran a creditable race in the Wanganui Guineas, and as stated in these columns at the time, lie struck one as being rather more than useful. Jockste: "Tod" Hewitt, after many years and much- travelling, was back again at Trentham this week, and was riding at the meeting. He has been offered several good mounts at Eieearton, and is reported to be riding as well as ever. This scribe wonders if l»e will ever put his leg across the equal of MenschikolT, Royal Artillery, Multifid, Noituiform, ('{olden Lily, Munjeet, Nightfall, and great horses he used to pilot in the early nineties. Another of the very early settlers of New Zealand, in the person of Mr. James Nicol. passed away at his residence, Mast"iton, on Saturday morning. The defeased. who had reached the great age of 85 years, came to New Zoaiand in the ship Blenheim, arriving at Wellington cn Christmas Day. IS4O. When quite a lad he became associated with horses. He had the m"nnts on the horses o£ ■Mr. St. Hill. In 1840 he rode the mare Bi lip. at Bunliam Water, Wellington, and was just defeated at the post. In 18q4 he rode the winner of the Te Aro Steeplechase. Later he owned Retribution, the winner o"i the first New Zealand Steeplechase, since called the Grand National Steeplechase. He also owned the sire Riddlesworth, one of the first thoroughbred horses to be imported to the Dominion.
