The Magistrate, Mr. Kcid. to-day is hearing the charge against Rcoullar and Company, Limited, of breach of the war regulations in allegedly supplying flax mattresses and pillows of a quality not in aceord with the terms of the contract. The case for the Crown alleged that the average weight of a number of mattresses supplied was l<nibs. It should have been lSlbs. Further, that many were filled with sour flax, rope ends, dust and sweepings off the floor, rendering them unfit and insanitary for use by the troops. The saving effected by supplying the light-weight mattress was from 4Jd to I'd each. Mr. Weston, for the defence, said it was admitted that owing to circumstances for which the management was not responsible, some of the mattresses were light-weight. The Crown had to prove it was done wilfully. : The case is proceeding. FINAL APPEAL FOR I VOLUNTARYISM, Dunedin, Yesterday.
