Ricketts, who at the time of writing was an inmate of the Second London General Hospital. He was suffering from the effects of no less than five shrapnel wounds. All the pieces r of shrapliel had been removed except one in h's side, but this was to be removed later. In the course of the letter he says that he hnd had to lie very quiet, so as to give the healing a chance, but, be adds' "I do not want to be laid up longer than I can help, as there is something else for me to do. It seems mighty hard that I had to leave my mates when there *vas heavy work to be done, but we have to take things as they come." He concludes with the following paragraph;—"l don't know whether it was Arthur Gilmour, of Manaia, or somebody else of the same name in the Otago Battalion, but one oft the men told me, that he carried in nine men. The man who told -me about it does not know where his home is, but knew he was at the Otago University. He reckoned that every time he got in he would ask i. anybody had seen any more out there, and th;.n out again he would go. There was no officer there to recommend him." It may be added that according to last letters received, Arthur Gilmour, whoac death in action was chronicled a few days agi, had been offered a transfer to a dental ccrps. Evidently the transfer had not taken place when he fell. Later news from one of the officers of his company, an old chum, is to the effect that he was also offered a commission, which had been before, two generals for approval. Unfortunately he did not live to receive the promotion, which, quite evidently, he so justly earned. Among those reported in recent lists as wounded and admtited in hospital is Acting-Bombardier G. Syme, son of Mr. G. Syme. junr., of Tangiwai, and a grand-son of Mr. G. Syme, of Hawera. Mr. and Mrs. T. W. White have received news from Mrs. White's sister, residing in Carlisle, to the effect
that their son. Private Norman Gouglt White, whq was wounded in France andi died at the Leicester Royal Infirmary or August 0, was accorded a funeral with! full military honors at Carlisle on tho 12th. Amongst numerous kind letters of sympathy received are included one from the Sister at the Infirmary, tha Chaplain, and the oflieiatin minister at the graveside. Tho N.Z.E.F. forwarded a beautiful wreath to his memory. j Mrs. D. M. Thomson, of Devon Streets has received a cable from her husband* Rifleman D. M. Thomson (of Ararata) saying that he is in London and doing l well. Rifleman Thomson left with the Main Expeditionary Force, and was wounded in Egypt on Christmas Day, and was again wounded in France oq September 16th. •• News iias been received in Wellington of the death from wounds of Sergeant E. J. Carey, who was reported a, few days ago to have been wounded. Sergeant Carey was very well known in Lalior circles in Now Zealand, and was secretary of the Hotel Cooks', Waiters' and Restaurant AVorkcrs* Union at tha time of his enlistment. He was aq energetic organiser and an active worker in tho cause of the unionists he n* presented, and his figure became familial in the Arbitration Court and tha lobbies of Parliament. He did not oon« ■ line his efforts to his own union., Bfa was one of the representatives of Wel« lington at many trades conferences, where he was a consistent advocate ol the advancement df Labor by political methods, and be assisted in the formation of the United Labor Party. Later lie opposed the merging of that organisation in the United Federation of La* bor and the Social Democratic Party. Just prioi to his enlistment in the lath Reinforcement, Mr. Carey represented the unions 'beforo the Arbitration Court when it was considering whether or not the functions of the Court should toe re> sumed in war-timei The deceased Was a fine type of Labor leader, and his IoM •will be felt by a wide circle. In yesterday's casualty and hospital lists appear the following:— Wounded, remaining with unit: Captain Frank M. S. Hitchcock (Mrs. Hitchcock, Stratford. Seriously ill: Private Robert Kindberg (Mrs. G. A. Kindberg, Victoria Road New Plymouth).
