WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)' Waitara, Yesterday. The Waitara ladies, by a house canvass and street collection, obtained £SO foi Red Cross purposes, whiclt I understand is to be remitted to Wellington. The manager of the Northern Steam Ship Co., Auckland, has notified the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce that the s.s. Arapawa, running fortnightly, is able to cope with all cargo offering for Waitara, but in the event of the trade increasing that will necessitate a weekly service he will then be prepared to reconsider his decision. Labor Day was very quiet about the town, as the public took advantage of the fine day and went to the opening of the season of the Waitara Bowling and Tennis Clubs. The. s.s. Arapawa is due to arrive from Oneinmga to-morrow, but owing to the heavy weather along the coast her arrival up to time is uncertain. The s.s. Port Napier sailed to-day for Lyttclton. She took the following cargo frpm this ppVt: 7032 quarters beef, CO7S •carcases miUton, 314 carcases lamb, 2707 pieces veal, 850 cases pork, 20G7 boxes and 1424 sacks frozen sundries. This has practically made a clearance at Borthwick's, and .so they will have any amount of freezing space when they open their work? for»tne seasnD on November ,Ist.
