IRELAND FULL OF SHIRKERS.

PROTEST FROM THE FRONT. COMPULSION NECESSARY. ' London, October 3. The Daily Mail publishes a letter from an Irishman on the Australian front in tiie West, expressing the surprise of the Dominion troops that Irish recruits are not forthcoming for the Irish battalions, the ranks of which must be filled by Englishmen and Scotsmen unless they are to be wiped out. He says that Ireland is full of healthy shirkers, and warns the men of that country that unless her men volunteer or compulsion is applied the effect of their hanging-back will be disastrous for Home Rule.

The Times, in a leading article, says: —'"Parliament's first duty is to estimate the man-power available for winter training, and, possibly, to increase the military age. Ultimately Mr. Lloyd George must speed up the combing-out process, and it is also urgently necessary to decide on compulsion for Ireland, an expedient which* has previously been withheld. Compulsion is the wisest course, and a great majority of Irishmen would welcome it."
