CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON

Wellington, Last Night Mr. R.Triggs (Assistant Public Service Commissioner), having been appointed licensing .authority under an Ordcr-in-Courfcil of October' 13th, adopting the Board of Trade's scheme for fixing the price of butter for local consumption and compensating local suppliers for the difference between the price of exported .butter and the price so fixed, invited to a conference with him yesterday butter trade representatives who were appointed last week to discuss with the Government or the Board of Trade any matters arising out of the operation of the scheme.
The conference met to-day. Mr. Triggs presided, and representatives of the but ter trade present were. Messrs W. Fisher, Paecy, Martin, Powdrell, Morion and Agar, in addition to the secretary to the Department of Agriculture (Air. F. S. I'ope), Mr. Cuddie (Director of the Dairy Division), and Mr. F. 11. Taylor (ollieer in charge of Imperial meat supply. Mr. Mac-Donald (of the Board of Trade) was also present, and Mr. Collie. A general discussion took place, and explanations wei'e afforded whenever desired. The chairman afterwards submitted for consideration of the conference a working arrangement for the carrying out of the Board )f Trade's scheme", also a statement as to the returns which would be required by the licensing authority for the purpose of giving effect to the Order-in-f'ouncil. The clauses of the working arrangement were considered seriatim, and certain suggestions were made .and alterations elt'ected by the conference as circumstances required. The working arrangement is supplementary to the Order-in-Council, and was prepared by Mr. Triggs with the object of facilitating the operation of the sciierae.
The form of license to V adopted was 'also discussed, and: some slight alterations were suggested, which will he referred to the Solicitor-General for his consideration. Eventually the working arrangement as amended was agreed to, members of the conference leaving the matter in Mr. Triggs' hands, and it will he issued to the various butter factories. The whole scheme will be in operation in the course of a few days. Mr. Triprgs stated to-night, in respect to the butter which may lie awaiting shipmenj, and upon which license fees have not been paid by factories, owing to the time being insiillicient to enable this to be done, that temporary permits will be given to export, providing exporters are willing to give a guarantee, making themselves liable for the payment of the license fees on sueh butter.
As the result of a conference yestciday it was decided to lower tue retail price of butter by a penny per lb.
