HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the WaU.ira Ilarbor Board was held on Friday night. Present: Messrs J. lline, junr. (chairman), A. M. llalcombe, C. Blanchr.rd, 11. J£. Vaughan, 11. Mc'Kcnzie, A. VV. Ogle and 11. Spurdle.
The Waitomu AJounty Council forwarded a resolution passed that the Go' eminent should stop the voluntary enlistment of young men Tor active service whilst mon of more mature-years were standing by and seeing these boys iiyht for them, and asking the Board's cooperation.—The 'chairman and other members expressed the opinion that a matter of this description should rot be dealt with by local bodies, but left to the Government. The Mokau Coal Co.'s lease on West Quay being now matured, a new least; is required, rental to be fixed by arbitration. —It was resolved to ask Mr. 11. M. jLund to net as arbitrator for t'lie Board. A letter was received from Mr. W. F. Jenkins in reference to the 'Board removing a shed from the section on West Quay recently bought by him. Mr. Jenkins stated that, in opposition to the opinion of his legal adviser, he was willing to forego the lease, and receive, his deposit back, rather than proceed with litigation.—lt was resolved to refund the deposit, and to inform Mr. Jenkins that no insinuation was intended in the Board's letter of some time back.
Considerable correspondence was read between Messrs Borthwiek awl Sons and the. Board in reference to the leasing of a store on West Quay, which Borthwick's had sub-leased from Messrs Burgess, Fraser and Co., and which expired on July 31 last. The chairman stated that he had, in the presence of Mr. Ogle and Mr. Fraser, received a verbal agreement from Mr._Lennon (sccretarj to Borfch wick's) to lease the store from October 1, and to undertake the necessary repairs that were required by the conditions of lease to Burgess, I'vaser and Co., the Board in the meantime releasing Burgess, Fraser and Co. from liability. Borthwick's bad now intimated that they wsuld not require the store.—lt -was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman.
The secretary gave a report in detail of the cost of re-l>uililing the wharf, showing that the job done £425 below tlie estimate given by Mr. W. J. Clare. The chairman/, in commenting on the job, said it was gratifying to know that the work was done at £423 below the estimate, and that the Hoard
were very fortunato in getting so able a man as Mr. Cla.ve, who had nv.ulo a most satisfactory wharf. Other members of the Board inlly endorsed the chairman's remarks. To compensate Mr. Clare for loss and damage to plant the Board resolved to grant him a bonus of £OO.
Mr. W. Sampson waited on the Board in reference to a little more land to go with the section recently leased by him, the land in question now being leased by the Board on an annual tenancy to Mi. Marnier.—lt was resolved to terminate the lease ,and to inform Mr. Marnier that the Boaird requires the land for the purposes that it was vested in the Board.
The Board went into on matters in connection with the harbor
loan. ... ~ On resuming, an application .rom the rowing clubs to sub-divide their leases was considered. It was resolved that the Board agree to the subdivision,.and that all costs in connection therewith ■be paid by the three clubs. ,
