PATRIOTIC WORK.

Tlio Frankley Road effort, for,the Belgian an 1 Serbian Relief Funds, on Saturday met 'vitli much success. The stall, at As.'ljriy's Corner, was replete with nil kinds of produce, hut so great was the ilenmud that it was practically denuded by noun. The flowers did not sell so reedily in the early part of the day, hut later cn there were, numerous buyers. The AW.nen',? Patriotic C'ommitteo cooperated v.-itli the Frankley Road Indies, and their, combined efforts resulted in £3* 18s fifing obtained. To this sum limit be added ;C4O, donations handed in to ihe Mayoress by Mr. Freethey, so Fiaiicl'y Koid did remarkably well. Mevi-iP.,:s Bal.antyne, N. Okey, J. 'He ii.-1 pfneeeds of the Red Cross mart r.u Saturday were £ll 10s, which must be considered very satisfactory m view ef the fact that gifts of produce, for cnce, were not forthcoming so freely as heretofore, mainly on account of ihe wet weather during the week. Nearly i.very perishable article was sold, but, the committee have a number of gifts on hand—such as pictures, a gun, etc., that they would like to see disposed of. Ni'xt Saturday will be "Our Day," the appeal for the Red Cross and Order of St. John, and special efforts will be made by all the local patriotic workers to make it an unbounded success. But this cannot be accomplished without the sturdy and whole-hearted simper! of the public, who must respond to the apnea! for such a grand cause. Atrs. Wilson, president of the local bran.-h, wishes it made known that next Saturday at the mart will also be "Cake Day," and it is hoped that, literally, hundreds of cakes will be sent in. They will be -c'd for the common cause, and any left over will be despatched to the front. r jwo sheep guessing competitions will be conducted by Mr. Sole, and the public will not be able to avoid any one of t':e numerous army of lady collectors that will be in Devon Street on Saturday. he Bed Cross Committee hopes to create a record for New Plymouth that day.
