liio kltliam young ladies tendered a farewell dance to the departing vcemits of the district, Messrs A, Par«ons, J. Zinsli, J. N'airn, H. Horn-blow, ami J . Maddoek at Oddfellows' Hall on I'i'iday evening. Mr E. I'arrott, on behalf of the ladies, expressed their admiration at the men going forward to help their comrades in the firing line, and wished them v, safe return. Mr L Hill suitably replied. Mi-, Cookham, a young lady from Wangan t\, greatly enhanced the pleasure of the evening by contributing 'songs and recitations. At a sitting of the Eltham Court last week, a young man was charged with securing -is from an Eltham .solicitor. This was the only case heard, hut several other charges of borrowing, aggregating over .1-6, are known. Accused was eon" victed, and ordered to refund the entire sum at the rate of liOs per week. Accused stated that lie had been s recruit at Trentham, but he failed to get to the front.
A meeting of Eltham townspeople was held on I'iiday, to consider hours o! closing and holidays. It was decided to close throughout the year, excepting December at !) pan. on Saturdays, pud during December at (1.30 p.m. Also the Thursday half holiday should commence at 12 noon. Besides tile statutory holidays the Sovereign's Birthday aiid La■bor Day wore included. Messia O'llagan and Carman were appointed a committee to interview shopkeepers re these holidays, and if the majority are favoralila they will be included in future holidays.
