METHODIST CHURCH.
QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting was held in the Whitelcv Hall on Thursday evening, presided over by the Rev A. B. Chappell, II.A. The Rev. C. H. Olds, B.A. was also present, and there was a good attendance of officials. Owing largely to the number of wet Sundays, the quarter ended with a deficiency of £5 lis fld. It was decided to accede to the request to make a retiring collection on October -2, in connection with the "Soldiers' Comforts Week." It was also resolved to adopt the same plan as last year on Christmas Sunday for special offerings to the Methodist Orphanage and other funds.
From the Sunday School reports it appeared that new schools had been opened at Korito and Upper Mangorei—the outcome of tiie recent mission efforts, which efforts throughout the circuit had shown encouraging results, in the decision of young people and others, and many cases of rc-consccration. With reference to the recent revelations as to the prevalence of drunkenness amongst natives, in some parts of New Zealand, the meeting expressed its earnest conviction that the Government should take steps to enforce thoroughly restrictive regulations under the liquor law. An invitation was extended to Rev. W. A Sinclair as superintendent of the circuit. The meeting empowered the circuit stewards with a small committee to take such action as they deem necessary to secure a suitable successor to the' Rev. C. H. Olds as second minister next year. , It was also decided to ask for the appointment of a home mission arv to labor in the circuit.
Messrs. W. F. Short, J. T. Griffin, and .1. Gibson were appointed lay representatives to the Synod which is to be held at Wanganui at the end of November, with Messrs. J. Sanders, C. E. Bcllringcr and E Ohatterton as substitutes. Messrs. R. Pepperell and E. Chatterton were elected auditors of circuit acaccounts.
Votes of thanks wore accorded to Messrs. Reeve, Cobham, and Maunder for their help in supplying services, and to Messrs. Wilmslmrst and Bransgrove for conveying preachers to their appointments. Rev. \V. Cannell and Mr. T. Chatterton were felicitated on reaching the ; r SOth and 7r>th birthdays respectively. Resolution? of sympathy were recorded with the familie- of the late Mr. .T. Martin and Mrs. Oliver, whose interest in the work of the church in the country places had been marked for so many years, and with the large number throughout the circuit of the relatives of those who have given their lives at the front.
