Mr. A. E. Carver, of the Deeds Office, is on transfer to Christchurch,

Mr. William Edward Ackroyd, district land valuer at Gisborne, died on Monday night. Mr. J. D, Hunter, who has been for some years on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Hawera, has received transfer on promotion to Ohura. Mr. W. T. Jenings, M.P., for Tanniarmmi, is visiting Wellington on business connected with his constituency. The death is reported from Napier of Captain Petterscn, of the s.s. Rum. , R le was ,17 years of age, and the cause of death was heart failure.

Mr. P. Brown (chief Government poultry instructor), and Mr. A. E. Salisbury (instructor), are on a visit to New Plymouth. A very old member of the Postal Service, Mr. Alfred Andrews, died at Wellington on Tuesday morning. The late Mr. Andrews became attached to the Post Office at Auckland in 1861, and after thirty-four years' service retired on a pension. For some time lie was head of the mail staff in Wellington. In 1867, when the first of the Thames goldfields were opened, Mr. Andrews was selected as postmaster, and opened the post office at Shortland. At a later date ho was appointed mail agent between San Francisco and Auckland, a position he occupied for fourteen years. A Press Association message states that it is announced that Mr. John Cullen, Commisisoner of Police, will retire from the Public Service on November 23. His time for retirement owing to age arrived in May last, but he was induced to carry on another six iuontfe at the request of the Government.

Last week's Gazette notifies that Lieut. Walter Bruce Johnstoite has been transferred from the I'escrve of Officers to be lieutenant in the 11th Begiment (Taranaki Rifles), to date from August 15, and that Major I), S. Wylie (N.Z.M.C.) is granted the temporary rank of Lieut.-Colonel as from June 2.
