THE PRICE OF BUTTER.

THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS. TO KEEP DOWN LOCAL PRICES. (Special to Daily News.) Wellington, Last Night. There are no new'developments to report in regard to the question of butter prices. The Government, it is understood, has taken into consideration the possibility of placing an export ta,v on butter, thus giving compulsory form to the levy proposed by the Board of Trade, and then using the proceeds of the tax to compensate firms which sold locally at below export rates. It might be possible to impose such export tax under the very wide powers conferred upon the Government by the War Regulations Act, but the proposal does not appear to have taken definite form.

Representatives of dairying interests have, hinted that the Government is bluffing, but if that is their idea, they probably arc mistaken. Ministers seem quite serious in their determination to keep the price of butter down within the. Dominion, even if prohibition of export luis to be carried to uncomfortable lensrths.
