PATRIOTIC WORK.

SOLDIERS' COMFORTS WEEK. A meeting of the committee was held at the Soldiers' Club yesterday, when there were present: Mrs. Burgess, Messrs. C. K Bollriii<<er (in the chair), .1. K. Hill, W. 11. Chancy, IX Hushes, V. Carter, and l'\ \V. C. McLuod (lion, .secretary). A letter was received froin the Pukekurii i'ark Trustees, granting the free use of the Park for the week, and also offering any assistance possible.—Offer accepted with thanks. The lion, secretary reported that matters in connection with the use of the Coronation Hall during the week were being arranged, and that satisfactory progress had been made with the proposed lighting of the Park, which was being expedited to be completed in time for the Carnival. It was resolved that the principals of the Boys' and Girls' High Schools be written to and asked for participation. Messrs. Bellringer and Hill, respectively, reported on matters regarding th* procession and the "schools" day. It was resolved that the Grounds Committee provide and be responsible for chairs and tables, and it wa« also decided to convene a meeting of carriers. It was decided that the Patriotic Committee be approached and asked to write the Waitara. League with reference to the insinuated encroachment on their reserve.

Mr. Hill stated that Mr. A. Gray hod offered to organise a novelty football match for Thursday, and it was resolved to accept the offer, and that the garden party should last from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Messrs. Ambury (convener), Hughes, Gray, Renaud, White, and H. L. Hogg were appointed a committee, with power to add, to arrange for a musical service in the IV- on the afternoon of Sunday week. Last evening there was a returned soldiers' gathering at the Soldiers' Club, where the men, to the number of about twenty, were entertained by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Burgess), assisted by several ladies. During the evening the first round of a billiard tournament for a medal donated by Mr. R. Cock, Brougham Street, was played, some good games resulting, and the tournament will be continued throughout the week. After a bountious supper had been partaken of, those present adjourned to the social room, where Sergeant Okey presided over a meeting to decide what should be done in regard to Soldiers' Comforts Week, and ii was decided that all present should attend in uniform at the procession on Labor Day, and that efforts should be made to induce returned men now resident in other parts of Taranaki to participate. Meriibers considered the committee should make arrangements for two or three returned soldiers resident in New Plymouth to meet all trains upon which were soldiers returning from the front, or who, going to it, were upon their final leave. The advantages of the Club were stressed by several speakers. Another suggestion that a visitors' book be procured was also favorably considered. A number of other matters were dealt with, and Mrs. Burgess and her coworkers were, by acclamation, warmly thanked for the hospitality accorded. The Mayoress (Mrs. Burgess) acknowledges .receipt of £5 from Mr. A. Mclnnes Bradbury, being the result of the art union for the model steam engine, made by him, for the Soldiers' Comfort.! Fund. The following is the draw for the second round of the patriotic billiard tournament, 200 up, at the Criterion Parloj's:— Preece v. Cooke, FitzgeraW v. Plumtrce, Bartlett v. Mouat, Leggatt v. Christensen, Barlow v. Higgs, Hughes v. Petty, Crawshaw v. Dodsou, Howlett v. Lister, Davy v. Gilbanks.
