AVe captured some positions. Our detachments in the Caucasus, by i a sudden resumption of the offensive in co-operation with the fleet, advanced on a wide front in the coastal region capturing a fortified position in the region of the river Karaburmim. Our advance guards broke through westward of Kalkst Tchivtlik, inflicting great losses, and destroyed earthworks at the enemy's rear. RUSSIA'S GREAT TASK. SLOWLY GAINING UPPER HAND. HTNDENBURG STRENGTHENS KOVEL. Received Oct. 0, 11 p.m. London, Oct. fi. Russian communiques are .always reticent legard'ing undecided battles, but there are indications that the Russians are slowly gaining the upper hand in Galicia and Volhynia. It is estimated in Petrograd that Genera) Hindenburg has ordered 000,000 reinforcements to the Kovel region. These initiated a series of violent coun-ter-attacks, wherewith General Brusiloff had to deal. The battle, fronts of Generals Sakharoff and Tcbcrbacheff are now nearly a Jmndicd miles forming the base of a triangle, whereof Lcmberg is the apex. The latest fighting is reported from the upper reaches of the illota Lipa and Narajowka, but it is not clear whether the Russians -have actually forced the crossing of the Narajowka! If so they will be at the rear of the main bridge"hcad defending Halicz. The Grand 'Duke Nicholas's move in Armenia is on a wide front, covered by the guns of the Black Sea fleet, and is timed for the moment of Turkey's resources being drained for Lembcrg's defence and the capture of Dobrudja. GERMAN REPORT London, October 5. The Russians continue to attack west of Lutsk. Successive waves broke down. The Roumanians retreated behind the Sinca Alt valley, also further north after fruitless efforts in the Hatszeg mountains on both sides of the Strell valley, the enemy withdrawing to the frontier heights. The Roumanians gained ground near Orsova. The enemy holds Nidy and the Planina heights. We again lost Jenikoj.
