BOWLING.
STRATFORD CLUB'S OFFICIAL * OPENING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. The official opening of the Stratford Bowling Club's green took place yesterday afternoon in splendid weather, when a very large number of member's and visiting bowlers were present. New Plymouth, Pihama, Hawera, Eltham, Ingiewood, and Epsom being represented, while there was a large attendance of ladies.
Since last year, the Club has improved the green by turfing the bare patches, lowering the banks, and planting, what was formerly the croquet lawn, while the side entrance to the green has been much improved in appearance. The club have in view making a new entrance from Cloton Eoad. This should be a considerable improvement when carried out
The president (Mr. J. Masters) said be was pleased to see such a large attendance of ladies and visiting howlers, and they were fortunate in having such fine weather. Praise wasi due to the caretaker (Mr, McLean), and 1 green warden (Mr. H. Edgecombe), for the excellent state of the green. Since the war started there had been three official openings, and the end was not in sight; they had to see it out to the end. Many of those present, no doubt, had boys at the front, and although they would like to see them all home again, still it must not be until they had thrashed the Germans, They ought to have a good year for the club. It had been said these matches would interfere with local matches, but he failed to see why they should.
