Mr. W. Kerr, S.M., with his wife and daughter, left Wunganui for Masterton on Monday.
Information 'received by the Defence Department shows that the late Sur "oon A. A. Martin received fatal shell wounds while attending to wounded men in n dressing station near the front lines.
Mr. IT. Walkley, head office manager of the Australian Alliance Assurance Company, is on his annual visit of inspection to New' Plymouth.
The death at Timaru of Mr. .T. B. Stfott, at the age of 08 years, removes a well-known citizen of Dnnedin, who, in bis sphere of commercial life, was well known and esteemed. The son of Captain Scott, of the East India Service, •■Mr. Scott came to New Zealand many years ago from Scotland. Mr. Scott was best known' through bis connection with the dairy export trade in the South Island. He was partly responsible for the arrangements for the first shipment Home of butter, at a time when the present refrigerating professes and faeili- • ties were unknown. Subsequently he was appointed secretary to the South Island Dairy Association. At the Upper Hutt on Tuesday evening a large gathering of farmers and settlers met to say farewell to Mr. P. Garvey, who is leaving the district. Mr. Garvey has been agent at the Upper Hutt for Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd.,. for the last six years, and is severing bis connection with the firm to take up an important position as fat stock buyer For the Taranaki Farmers' Co-operative Meat Company. Mr. Ward, who occupied the chair, spoke very highly of Mr. Garvey'a business qualifications, and of the esteem iii which li'e is also held for bis sterling personal worth. On behalf of his numerous friends, the chairman asked Mr. Garvey to accent a cheque as a token of their regard. Mr. .1. B. Moodie, speaking for Messrs. Dalgety and Co., said it gave him the greatest pleasure to be present, and to endorse all that Mr. Ward had said. The company was exceedingly sorry to lose Mr. Garvey's services after a connection ex- , tending over fourteen years, but he congratulated him heartily on the position he had secured, whMi he thoroughly, descried, and predicted for him an increasing measure of success in the work he is now undertaking.
