WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Oct. 5.
Mr. F Ross has been conducting a dancing class here this season for the purpose of raising funds to. help the Young Ladies' Sewing Guild. He has so far been very successful, and hopes to give the Guild a well-filled purse by a final effort on Tuesday night next. The s.s. Port Napier is due to arrive in the Roadstead about the middle of the month, and will take about 20 barges of frozen meat from this port. This. I understand, will make a clearance of the chambers at Borthwick's.
Some time ago it was reported that Messrs. Borthwick's contemplated an enlargement of their freezing chambers, but I understand that owing to being unable to procure the necessary refrigerating machinery in time for this season it has been decided to let the matter stand over for the present. A petition signed by the business people of Waitara has been forwarded to the head office of the Northern Steamship Company, asking them to reconsider their decision in closing the Waitara agency and controlling the local business from New Plymouth.
By Thursday morning's train there was despatched by the Soldiers' Comforts Committee eleven cases for the boys in France. Five of these were sheep tongues, five assorted, and one containing 1001b of Ilaveloek tobacco. In addition to this £jo w«is forwarded to the High Commissioner, with instructions to spend £2O in the purchase of yellow and green Three Castles cigarettes, and the balance of £3O to be expended in comforts for the boys in the various hospitals. This course was adopted with the view of getting the greatest value for the class of comfort that will be appreciated. It is rather a coincidence that last year the goods for the boys at Gallipoli left here on the same date. Next week the Egyptian parcels are to be forwarded. Among these will be 10,000 cigarettes, 801b Ilaveloek tobacco, something like half a ton of lollies and seven eases of assorted jams, which, with the miscellaneous other good things, will I make up a very serviceable contribution from North Taranaki.
In addition to the above another 200 parcels are being sent through the Lady Liverpool Fund, and the whole will represent something like £2OO worth. At_the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr. Bartley, electrical engineer to the New Plymouth Borough Council, was appointed to act as arbitrator for the borough in connection with the proposal to take over and municipalise the electric light. il'rior to taking any business at the Borough Council meeting, a vote of condolence was passed to Mr. and -Mrs. W. Trim, on the loss of their son Hairy at the front. Mr, Trim has been the borough's capable foreman for many years, and the councillors felt great the loss of such a promising lad. The vote- wns ca-rried in the usual way,
