ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, Oct. 5. A loc.il land agent states there is still a keen demand for pnoperty locally, anl that several sales have taken place. The Elthain Presbyterians anticipate ■removing their church from its present site to a more central one. At a congregational meeting on Tuesday evening it was decided to secure a section in Scanners Street, which- .was under offer. The idea of the church people is to build a manse and a church on the same section, and Tuesday's decision was the fir.st step in that direction.

A concert in aid of the Eltham District High School Committee was held on Wednesday night, and was very successful. It is expected that £ls will be on which the Government will pay a £ for £ subsidy. Mr. R. Masters, chairman of the Taranaki School Committee, with Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., visited the schools in the district yesterday. Visits were paid to Eltham, Rawhitiroa, and Mangamingi. The object of the visit was that the two members of the Board could make themselves acquainted with the needs of the district.

The Salvation Army Guild has forwarded to Wellington a substantial case containing comforts for the men at the front. The Belgian Sewing Guild has also sent a number of cases this week. The Guild, in all, dispatched 20 cases, G coming from Mangaboki and 23 from the Guild. Four cases will be given to the Maori unit.

According Jo the organiser of the Taranaki Fanners' Union, M. G. H. Buckeridge, steady, if slow, progress is being made with the organisation work in the district. Branches of the Union have already beeu formed at Stratford and Manaia.

Our popular stationmaster, Mr. Bennett, is at present an inmate of the New Plymouth hospital. He was operated upon a day or two ago, and is now progressing satisfactorily.
